Schomberg Main Street Downtown Revitalization

The Challenge

Schomberg Main Street business was in decline, with many businesses being converted to street level residential.  King Township received an OMFRA grant in 2018 for a 2 year project to develop and implement a revitalization strategy for Schomberg.

The Scope

The project involved a resident survey, business survey, visioning workshop and trade area analysis.  Working with businesses & seven community groups, a vision and core strategy was articulated and supported by Council.  A website and social media account were developed to serve as hubs to promote Main Street businesses.  The strategy entered its implementation phase in 2019.

The Impact

Since the beginning of the project, twelve new businesses have opened on Main Street, including six restaurants and cafés, five retail destinations and a hair salon.  A second OMAFRA grant was awarded to implement the strategy, including hiring a full time Main Street co-ordinator.   Businesses and community groups have a sense of optimism about their future, and are engaged in bringing the strategy to life.
